Love is Ageless, Loneliness Isn't

Love is Ageless, Loneliness Isn't. Written by Isabelle Munafo

The United States is facing a severe epidemic of loneliness, particularly amongst its senior population. The US Department of Health and Human Services highlights that the adverse physical health impacts of insufficient social connection can be significant, contributing to a:

  • 29% increase in heart disease risk
  • 32% increase in stroke risk
  • 50% increase in the likelihood of developing dementia and a greater than
  • 60% increase in the risk of premature death for older adults.

Additionally, recent data from the CDC for the year 2021 highlights that men aged 85 and above have the highest recorded rates of suicide deaths.

As we age, our physical and cognitive health declines, which can have a negative impact on our mental well-being. Other impact factors include grieving the loss of loved ones and feelings of isolation. Individuals with mobility complications are often confined to their homes with little social connection.

Envision Partnership’s Butler County Suicide Prevention Coalition is launching the Older Adult Taskforce, which will focus on suicide prevention specifically among the older adult population in Butler County.
