What is Minimize Risk ~ Maximize Life (MRML)?
Minimize Risk ~ Maximize Life (MRML) is an evidence-based program for adults of all ages who would like to learn about reducing their risk of problems related to their alcohol consumption. Through the use of a PowerPoint presentation and guided discussions, adults learn how to minimize their risk for alcohol problems while maximizing the quality of their lives.
Why MRML was developed:
Alcoholic beverages remain the most used and abused substance for people of all ages. Alcohol consumption is normalized in social context yet has consequences for individuals, families, and communities.
- Increase the use of low-risk drinking guidelines among adults
- Decrease high-risk alcohol use among adults
- Decrease problems associated with high-risk alcohol use
- Increase understanding of low-risk drinking guidelines language and concepts to share with others (including youth)
Who can implement MRML?
Trained professionals and lay people in social work, prevention, education, counseling, ministry, community centers, retirement communities, EAPs/workplaces, the military, sports, and parent groups.

How long is the course?
MRML can be delivered in two hours. The course can be delivered all at once or sectioned into smaller segments as needed. Optional activities included in the curriculum can expand the length of delivery, when needed. Optional activities are not to be used in place of the core content.
The course is:
- Specifically designed for adult learners
- Easy to use and implement
- Flexible and adaptable
- Semi-scripted and conversational
What is the preferred audience size?
There is no minimum number of participants. For ideal discussion and participant interaction, a group size of 12-15 individuals is recommended. We suggest that groups be no larger than 40. Facilitators should consider utilizing small groups for activities when group size exceeds 20 participants.
What are the elements of the MRML course?
- Facilitator’s guide
- PowerPoint presentation slide deck
- Participant worksheets
- Post-course evaluation
Evidence based — MRML is a brief education intervention based on several sound and effective theories, including principles of effectiveness and techniques for substance use prevention programs.
This program is based on the drinking guidelines for adults used by both the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
