What is early intervention?
Early Intervention programs are brief and happen as needed, as an alternative to suspension or to intervene before court involvement. School-based early intervention is referral-based by a principal, counselor, or can be self-referred. Topics can include truancy, getting caught with a vape or other substance, or in-school conflicts.
Program Audience & Goals
Who is early intervention for?
The intended audience for early intervention is youth who have experienced some negative outcomes from their behavior that could result in suspension, expulsion, or possible court involvement. This is as-needed for the people involved.
What are the goals of this program?
The primary goal is to intervene before a suspension, expulsion, or court-involvement occurs, doing so with education and problem-solving. Although it is brief- just one or two sessions- early intervention is very effective at getting to the root of the problem and helping the student(s) identify a plan to avoid further consequences.
The Mediation and Facilitated Problem Solving (MaPS) program takes place during the school day with a trained mediator. Community Early Intervention takes place with the student and their parent/guardian(s) outside of school time, but can be referred by school personnel any time.
